Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs and can significantly impact their mobility and quality of life. The disease can begin in very young dogs and it progresses over time. Disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) are one class of drugs that can actually slow progression of the disease by reducing loss of cartilage and improving joint health. Adequan (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan) is a commercially available DMOAD that is commonly used early in the course of the disease to proactively slow the loss of cartilage in the dog's joints.
