Medications commonly used for treating itchiness (pruritus)

* Any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) should only be given if by the direction and supervision of a veterinarian! 
Do not give these to your pet unless recommended by your veterinarian.


Prescription Medications

  • Hydroxyzine (Atarax)
  • Trimeprazine-prednisone (Temaril-P)
  • Doxepin (Sinequan)
  • Cyproheptadine (Periactin)
  • Amitriptyline (Elavil)
  • Pentoxifylline (Trental) … most helpful for contact allergy
  • Cyclosporine (Atopica) … very effective but costly
  • Genesis spray (very low dose triamcinalone spray 0.015%) - NOT AVAILABLE
  • Gabapentin (Neurontin)
  • Fluoxetine HCl (Prozac)
  • Montelukast (Singulair)
  • Oclacitinib (Apoquel)

“Over-the-Counter” Antihistamines

  • Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
  • Chlorpheniramine (Chlortrimeton)
  • Clemastine (Tavist-1 not Tavist-D)
  • Loratadine  (Claritin) without decongestant
  • Cetirizine  (Zyrtec) without decongestant
  • Fexofenadine HCl (Allegra) without decongestant  


May also be used in combination with the above medications 
(AT VETERINARY DISCRETION ONLY):

  • Cimetidine (Tagamet)
